7 Most Common Mechanical and Electrical Problems in Maserati Vehicles

May 30, 2025

Maserati vehicles are known for their Italian craftsmanship, sleek design, and exhilarating performance. But like many high-performance luxury cars, they can come with their own set of quirks, especially when it comes to mechanical and electrical reliability. If you’ve owned a Maserati or are thinking of buying one, it helps to know what kind of issues you might run into so you can stay ahead of costly repairs.

These are seven of the most common mechanical and electrical problems that tend to show up in Maserati models, based on what we see regularly in the shop.

1. Suspension Wear and Air Strut Failures

Maseratis often come equipped with adaptive suspension systems that deliver a smoother and sportier ride. However, those systems rely on electronically controlled air struts or dampers that are more complex than traditional setups. Over time, these components wear out, especially if the vehicle is driven frequently on uneven roads.

If your Maserati feels unusually bouncy or you notice it sitting lower on one side, there’s a good chance the air suspension is having trouble. Replacing air struts or shocks isn't uncommon once the car hits higher mileage.

2. Electrical Gremlins in the Infotainment System

One of the most reported frustrations with Maserati vehicles is the infotainment system. Glitches like frozen screens, delayed responses, or complete system resets happen more often than they should in a car of this caliber.

While some issues can be fixed with software updates, others may point to hardware problems or wiring issues. Bluetooth pairing, backup cameras, and navigation malfunctions are especially common in older Ghibli, Levante, and Quattroporte models.

3. Engine Misfires and Ignition Coil Failures

Engine misfires in Maseratis are frequently traced back to ignition coil failures. These coils wear down over time and can cause poor performance, hesitation, or rough idling. When paired with worn spark plugs, the symptoms become even more noticeable.

If your car throws a check engine light along with a drop in power, misfires could be the cause. Replacing ignition coils and plugs as a set is typically the best solution.

4. Transmission Hesitation or Rough Shifting

Some Maserati owners report delayed gear changes or rough shifting, especially in automatic models like the Ghibli and Quattroporte. These issues can stem from a faulty transmission control module, worn solenoids, or simply outdated transmission fluid that’s overdue for a change.

Routine fluid service and proper diagnostics are key here. Ignoring minor shifting issues can lead to major internal transmission damage down the line.

5. Battery Drain and Charging Problems

Electrical drain is another issue that tends to creep up in Maserati ownership. If your vehicle struggles to start after sitting for a few days or if accessories behave unpredictably, there may be a parasitic drain on the battery.

Faulty modules, sensors, or even a trunk light that won’t turn off can slowly drain the battery over time. Tracking down the source of the drain takes some time, but it’s essential to avoid repeat battery failures.

6. Leaking Valve Cover Gaskets

Oil leaks are common in Maseratis, particularly around the valve cover gaskets. As the rubber gaskets age, they can become brittle and start seeping oil onto the engine. Not only does this create a mess under the hood, but it can also lead to burning oil smells or smoke if the oil hits hot components.

Catching the leak early can prevent damage to surrounding wiring or engine parts.

7. Brake Wear and Sensor Alerts

The weight and performance of a Maserati mean the brakes do a lot of work, and that wear can show up sooner than expected. In addition to frequent pad and rotor replacements, the brake wear sensors themselves can become a problem—triggering alerts even when the brakes still have life left.

It’s important to have both the pads and sensors checked to determine whether it’s a real issue or just a faulty reading.
